Civil Code § 3342 removes the hardest element from a bite case: you do not have to prove the owner knew the dog was dangerous. If you were bitten in a public place or somewhere you were lawfully present, the owner is liable. Trespassers are outside the statute, and a knock-down without a bite is handled as ordinary negligence.
