Hollywood Dog Bite Lawyer

California makes a dog owner liable for a bite that happens in a public place or where the bitten person was lawfully present, whether or not the dog had ever bitten anyone before (Civil Code § 3342). In Hollywood, the bite is reported to LAPD Hollywood Division or to Los Angeles Animal Services, and the animal is placed under a rabies observation period administered through Los Angeles County public health.

Strict liability, and what it does not cover

Civil Code § 3342 is a strict liability rule: you do not have to prove the owner was careless or that the dog had a history. What matters is that the bite happened in a public place or somewhere you were lawfully present. The statute does not protect a trespasser, and it applies to bites — a dog that knocks someone down is handled under ordinary negligence instead.

Runyon Canyon is a recurring source of claims because the park has designated off-leash areas and heavy crowding on narrow trails. Off-leash status does not eliminate an owner's liability for a bite; it can, however, become an argument about comparative fault, which is why the details of where you were standing matter.

What to do after a bite in Hollywood

Get the wound cleaned and documented the same day. Bite wounds carry a high infection risk and the first medical record establishes both the injury and its cause.

Report it. A report to Los Angeles Animal Services starts the rabies observation period and creates an official record identifying the dog and its owner — the single most important fact in the claim, and the one hardest to reconstruct later.

Photograph the wound before and after it is dressed, and again as it heals. Scarring on the face, hands or legs is a distinct element of the claim, and healed scars photograph very differently from fresh ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

The dog had never bitten anyone before. Does that matter?

Not for a bite claim under Civil Code § 3342. California's rule is strict liability, so the owner is responsible for a bite in a public place or where you were lawfully present even if the dog had no history at all.

It happened in the off-leash area at Runyon Canyon. Do I still have a claim?

Generally yes. An off-leash area permits a dog to be off leash; it does not give an owner permission for the dog to bite someone. Civil Code § 3342 still applies, though the circumstances may be raised as comparative fault. Get advice on the specific facts.

How long do I have to file a claim in California?

Most California injury lawsuits must be filed within two years of the injury (Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1). If a city, county, or state agency is a defendant — a municipal vehicle, a dangerous roadway condition, a public sidewalk — you generally have six months to present a written government claim first (Government Code § 911.2). Talk to a lawyer early so a deadline never decides the case for you.

What does it cost to hire the firm?

Nothing up front. We work on a contingency fee, so there is no attorney's fee unless we win your case, and the first consultation is free and confidential.

What I loved about this firm is that they offer free consultations. They were very honest with me about my personal injury case and advised me of the good and the bad. They didn't just tell me what I wanted to hear — it was refreshing to have someone so honest.
